Here is a visual representation of how to structure and organize your Refined sites.

Some say that customers come to Refined for the look and feel, but they stay for the structure and organization. Refined adds a lot of powerful new ways to organize your content into a much smoother navigation.

Structure and Organization Concepts in Refined

Sites

A site is a Refined version of Confluence connected to your Confluence instance. When you activate Refined you will activate a skin that sits on top of your Confluence site. In addition to the main Confluence site you can add as many additional sites as you wish. Each site has its own categories, spaces and pages. You can also assign users to sites and set start sites for users.

Note: On Cloud, rather than Refined being an app installed onto a Confluence site like a skin, it is a Refined site connected to Confluence. So on Cloud you always have the Confluence version and a parallel Refined version of the site.

Categories / Pages

A category is a collection of spaces organized into a group we call a category (called a page on Cloud). Categories sit in a dropdown navigation menu. Each category has a dashboard you can use to collate information for that category. You can also deactivate the dashboard if you prefer. If you have a lot of spaces in a category use subcategories to organize the spaces.

Note: On Cloud, Categories are called ‘Pages’. But operate in the same way as on Server/DC.

Site Builder

The Site Builder is in a tab in the Refined admin section where you create sites and categories and organize Confluence spaces into their respective categories. The site builder is also where you can apply themes (on a site and category level) and view permissions.

Note: On Cloud you must use the Confluence permissions to manage who can see which page. On Server/DC you can activate “Manual category permissions” and assign site view permissions.

The way you structure your site and navigation depends entirely on your business structure and the purpose of your site. So the next part is up to you. But you’re welcome to get in touch with us if you want some guidance.
