Install Refined

Go to the Atlassian Marketplace to install Refined for Confluence Cloud and/or Refined for Jira Cloud.

The Refined Administration

Refined lets you create sites that show content from Confluence and Jira. Because these sites live parallel to Confluence and Jira, you create and manage them with a separate site-building tool: the Refined Administration. You still manage your content in Confluence and Jira, meaning that all the updates you make there are instantly reflected on your Refined sites as well.

Open the Refined Administration for the first time

  1. Open Confluence Cloud, Jira Software Cloud or Jira Service Management Cloud.

  2. In the top menu, click Apps > Refined.

  3. Click the Start building now button.

...

Info

If you have already created a Refined site before, you can also access the Refined Administration directly from that site. In the site’s top-right corner, click the Cogwheel and select where you want to go in the Site Administration (Site Builder, Configuration, Permissions, Audience Features, or Site Switcher).

Create a Refined site

  1. Go to the Refined Administration.

  2. Click Sites in the left-hand menu.

  3. Click the + button.

  4. Decide what we should call your site in the Refined Administration. This name also shows up in the browser tab for your site’s visitors.

  5. Choose your site’s URL by picking a subdomain: (subdomain).refined.site. While you are welcome to keep this URL, you can also set up a custom domain later.

...

Add and arrange content in the Site Builder

After creating your site, you land in the Site Builder. This is where your site takes shape:

  1. Add Content using the green button at the top of the Site Builder. Let’s start out by adding one or more Confluence spaces/JSM projects.

  2. Structure content into a hierarchy: add Refined Pages and Menu Folders, and then drag and drop content items to arrange them. This structure shapes your site’s navigation menu.

Go to your Refined site

After you added content, you can see what it looks like on your Refined site. Hover your cursor over the content item and click the Arrow that appears next to the … (Three dots). This takes you to the content’s landing page:

  • On a Confluence space’s landing page, users can access the Confluence space’s pages and blogs. You can use the Page Builder to customize this page. For example, on a landing page about HR you can show quick links to onboarding guides and a news feed of the latest updates in the employee handbook.

  • On a JSM project’s landing page, users can create and view requests. You can use the Page Builder to customize this page. For example, help your users help themselves by adding links to a knowledge base.

Info

You can also use the Page Builder to edit your site’s home page and your Refined Pages.

JSM + Refined 101

View JSM projects in Jira

Refined sites let you present Jira projects in a clean, branded way. You still manage your projects' content in JSM, meaning that the updates you make there will show immediately on your Refined sites.

To move between your Refined site and JSM:

  1. On your Refined site, go to the top-right side of the page.

  2. Click the … Three dots > View project in Jira.

...

Create and view requests

  1. Go to a JSM project’s landing page.

  2. Click on a request type to open the form, fill it out and hit Send.

  3. Go to the request by following the link in the notification that comes up once the request is created. You can add comments and attachments to your JSM requests via the Refined site, just as you could via the native portal.

  4. You can find a list of requests at any time by clicking your avatar in the top-right corner > My requests. A red number on your avatar menu shows how many open requests you have.

  5. In the Requests overview, you can find specific requests by using the search bar or setting the following filter(s):

  • Open requests / closed requests / any status

  • Created by me / created by anyone / shared with me / shared with my organizations

    • Note that created by anyone includes tickets created by you or shared with you. Shared with me includes tickets

  • Request type (specific to the JSM projects added on that Refined site)

...

Go from a JSM project to its Refined landing page (JSM agents)

In the left-hand menu, click Refined to see all Refined sites that include your JSM project. Select a site to go to the JSM project’s landing page.

...

Take control of your site’s look and feel

Aside from the Page Builder, there are more ways to let your site reflect your brand:

  1. Add your organizations logo.

  2. Create and apply a theme.

  3. Customize the Confluence space settings, for example to hide the page’s authors or enable user feedback.
