Content and structure items

Most sites consist of a mix of these content and structure items:

  • A Refined Page is a customizable landing page. Although it doesn’t feature a specific Confluence space, Jira Software project or JSM project itself, you can let it show content from spaces and projects that are already added in the site structure. You can group items under the Refined Page to create a drop-down list in the navigation menu.

  • Menu folders also let you create drop-down lists in the navigation menu. As opposed to a Refined Page, a menu folder doesn’t have a landing page.

  • When you add a Confluence space, you add all its pages and blog posts to the site. You can feature them on customizable landing pages to help users navigate the space’s content.

  • When you add a JSM project, you create a customizable landing page for the project. Users can create and view requests on this page.

  • When you add a Jira project, you create a customizable landing page for the project. Users can create and view issues on this page. Note that due to maintenance, it’s temporarily not possible for customers whose accounts were created after 20 August 2023to add Jira projects to Refined sites.

  • Links let you direct users to any page you want, on or off your site, straight from your site’s navigation menu.

Add items to your site

  • Click the + Add space or project button to choose spaces and projects from your linked Confluence/JSM instance.

  • Click the + Add other item button to add a Refined Page, menu folder, or link.

Shape the navigation menu

The content you add will automatically appear in your site’s navigation menu. By dragging and dropping items, you can group them to create drop-downs in the navigation menu. You can also organize items into folders, and add links to other sites as menu items. You can even exclude certain items from the navigation menu if you want.

Info

You can add a Confluence space, Jira project, or JSM project to as many different sites as you want.

Edit an item’s settings

Click the item’s (blue star) three dots > Settings.

Edit an item’s view permissions

View permissions let you decide who can see specific Refined Pages, links and menu folders. This helps you tailor the site to different types of users.

  1. Click the item’s (blue star) three dots > (blue star) Permissions.

  2. Choose who can see the item. The same permissions apply to items grouped under it, unless those items have more restrictive permissions.. See examples in the image below.

  • All users. Default setting, no restrictions applied.

  • Only logged-in users. The item shows a lock icon in the site structure.

    • You can even limit access to specific Atlassian user groups. You need to be an Atlassian administrator to see or edit user groups.

  • Only users who aren’t logged in. The item shows a lock icon in the site structure.

...

Interactions with other permissions

You can also set general site access permissions and granular permissions on specific content on landing pages of Refined pages, Confluence spaces, Jira projects, and JSM projects.

All types of permissions are closely related and may impact each other. For example, a user who doesn’t have access to a landing page still won’t be able to see a section that’s set to be Accessible to anyone.

Edit an item’s customizable page

  1. Click the item’s (blue star) three dots > (blue star) Edit page.

  2. Edit the landing page in the page builder.

Info

Refined Pages, Confluence spaces, Jira projects and JSM projects all have a customizable page. A space’s customizable page can be disabled.

Delete an item

  1. Click the item’s (blue star) cogwheel > (blue star) Delete.

  2. In the popup that appears, click the Delete button to confirm your action.

When you delete content a Refined Page, Confluence space, Jira project or JSM project from your site, you lose the changes you made to its layoutcustomizable page. If you want to use the layout of that layout page again in the future, we recommend exporting it in the Page Builder before deleting the contentitem from the site structure. This way, you can import it to another piece of content later.

When you delete a page from a site, it is also removed from your promoted search results.

Recognise content types and sources

Looking at the Site Builder, you might have noticed that each content item features one or two icons. The icons give you an overview of the types and sources of content on your site.

The icon on the left-hand side of your content item indicates its content type: Page, Link, or Menu Folder. Confluence spaces, Jira Software projects and JSM projects always feature the Page icon and a content source icon, which is the logo of the Atlassian product.

On the right-hand side of the Site Builder, you can find an overview of the icons and their meanings.
