One big benefit of using Refined is to get pages that contain good and structured content for anyone visiting.

All items added to Refined will get a landing page. This landing page is structured the same way, and related to the level it sits on, we call them:

  • Site home
  • Category home
  • Jira project
  • Jira Service Desk portal

Content is shown in the pages using modules, and the layout is arranged in the Layout Editor.

What is the layout of a page?

The layout of the page consists of a structure - the layout itself - and the content.

Both structure and content are edited and setup using the layout editor.

Example 1

A two section layout:

  • a Search module in the top section
  • a Site Navigation module

Example 2

A two section layout:

  • a Search module in the top section
  • two columns in the second section with an Issue Type module to the left, and a Jira Issues module to the right.

Example 3

A two section layout:

  • a Navigation Highlight module on top
  • a Request Types module on the bottom.

Who can edit a layout?

The edit permissions depends on the type of page, and the user's permissions.

jira-administrators

Any Jira Administrators - a member of the jira-administrators User Group - will be able to edit any layout of any item in Refined. This includes Jira and Jira Service Desk projects that they are not permitted to see via the Jira Permission settings.

Refined Administrators

A Refined Administrator is administrator of any Refined setting. For any item that is added to that site - be it a category, a Jira project or JSD portal or the site itself - the Site Admin can edit any Refined Page in the Site.

Site Administrators

A Site Administrator is administrator of a site. For any item that is added to that site - be it a category, a Jira project or JSD portal or the site itself - the Site Admin can edit any Refined Page in the Site.

Portal data security

The extra content (links, images..) that are stored on Service Desk portal pages introduced by Refined Theme are viewable for logged in users through the REST API. However, no portals will be displayed in the UI that the user have no access to.

Building your layout

Structure

The structure of the page is set using

  • sections - horizontal containers
  • columns - vertical containers

There can be as many sections as you need, and each section can have up to six columns.

The height of the section is set by the content. For instance, adding a Navigation Highlight you can specifically set the height to a number of pixels, and adding a Jira Issues list the height will be what is needed to display the issues.

The width of the columns is set to a percentage using a drag-motion between the columns.

View Permissions to sections

Permissions can be set to a section based on the users visiting the page, meaning the power to only show certain content to certain users. Example: prompt to login to anonymous users and information only accessible to logged in users only to logged in users.

Content

Content is added to your page via Modules - you add modules to the layout, and populate the modules with content.

Modules can be automatically populated - for instance showing all the Jira Issue Types of a Jira project, or manually populated - adding an image or logo and a text.
