Embedded pages

Although the vast majority of Confluence pages are displayed on Refined sites without problem, you might want to add pages to your sites that include formatting or macros that Refined doesn’t (fully) support.

In that case, embed Confluence pages on private Refined sites so they look just as they do in native Confluence:

  • Display any third-party macro

  • Show all original formatting

  • Edit the page directly on the Refined site. This is only possible for the new Confluence editor and if the user has Confluence permissions to do so.

Availability

Due to technical limitations, this feature is only available on private sites that don’t have a custom domain. Please vote on this public Atlassian ticket. Site visitors on Chrome need to have cookies enabled to see the pages.

If the setting is not available, it will be displayed in grey in the site’s Space Settings.

Impact on other settings and performance

Embedding Confluence pages:

  • Disables the following the space settings:

    • Display authors. The embedded pages will still show author and last updated though, because this is standard information on a native Confluence page.

    • Show estimated read time

    • Table of content

  • Moves some controls that are normally located at the top of the page, to the bottom of the page:

  • May cause slightly slower performance on-page.

  • May cause certain page interactions not to work, such as opening links located within third-party macros.

Additionally, since Embedded Confluence Pages are shown in an iFrame, some macros will be displayed as an iFrame within an iFrame (e.g. Miro or Figma). In those cases, this may result in a sub-optimal experience for users.

Display authors

Show authors at the top of Confluence pages and blog posts. This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting. The embedded pages will still show author and last updated though, because this is standard information on a native Confluence page.

Show estimated read time

Show the estimated read time at the top of Confluence pages and blog posts. This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting.

Enable Confluence space homes

When this setting is disabled, clicking the title of the left-hand side menu takes users to a customizable landing page. When this setting is enabled, it takes you to the space home (space overview) instead. Regardless of this setting, users can find the Confluence space home via search, modules, or Confluence Pages.

To direct users to your Confluence space home instead of the landing page on your site, link a module directly to it in the Page Builder:

  1. Add the space to your Refined site. You can choose to hide it from the navigation menu, if you’d like.

  2. Enable the Confluence space home for this space.

  3. On any page in this space, click the title of the left-hand menu to see the space home. Copy the URL of this page.

  4. Add that URL to a module in the Page Builder.

Table of contents

A table of contents helps users navigate long pages:

  • It lists all headings on a page

  • It moves along with the user as they scroll down

  • It shows which paragraph the user is reading

  • It can take users to another paragraph with a simple click.

Users can hide or show the table of contents by clicking the button on the right-hand side of the page. Note that the button only appears when you set the Confluence page width to 68% or less in the Theme Editor.

This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting.
