By adding Refined sites in your Jira instance, you create separate experiences for each of your users. For example, you can create one IT help desk that includes your Jira projects related to IT, and one HR help desk that includes your HR-related Jira projects.

You can add structure to your sites by organising your Jira projects into categories and subcategories. Since Refined version 3.0, you can also add custom links to your site’s navigation.

Site Builder

The Site Builder is the essence of your Refined site. It’s where you add content and build the navigation menu. There are two ways to access the Suite Builder:

 Via Jira Administration
  1. Go to Jira Administration > Manage apps.

  2. Click Refined Configuration > Open Refined Administration.

Via a Refined site or portal
  1. From the Refined site, click the Cogwheel in the top right corner.

  2. Click Site Builder.

Global JSM site and additional Refined sites

Refined is set up a bit differently, depending on whether you have installed Jira Service Management, Jira Core, Jira Software, or a combination of the three.

When you combine Refined (version 2.0 and newer) with Jira Service Management, your Help Center from native JSM is replaced by a Global JSM site. This site can’t be removed and holds all your Jira projects: from JSM, but also from Jira Core and/or Jira Software, if you have them installed.

Aside form the Global JSM site, you can add as many additional sites as you want by clicking the Add site button in the Site Builder. You can then drag and drop projects away from the Global JSM site into the additional sites. If you have installed Jira Core and/or Jira Software as well, it is possible to also add projects from there into your Global JSM site by clicking the + Plus icon > Include Jira Projects.

When you combine Refined with only Jira Core and/or Jira Software, there is no global site. You have to manually create one or more Refined sites, and add projects to them.

Using Refined only on specific sites

By default, Refined applies to your Global JSM site. If you prefer to keep the default JSM look and feel, go to the Jira Service Management tab and turn off Activate Refined globally:

  • Turned off means that Refined applies to all your JSM portals: the ones on your Global JSM site as well as the ones on all additional sites. In the Site Builder, a green label on the Global JSM site tells you that theming is activated.

  • Turned on means that Refined only applies to JSM portals that are placed on other Refined sites. In the Site Builder, a blue label on the Global JSM site tells you that theming is not activated.

Note that Refined always applies to additional sites.

Site settings

You can set up the site when adding it in the site builder, and edit it later by xyz

  1. Add the name and the URL path to the site, the URL can be used as a link to the site.

  2. Set the permissions for the site. Note: The permissions determine what users can see the site. If a JSM project is placed on a site, having a URL for a portal the user can see, will show the portal even though the user can't see the site itself. Permissions are based on User Groups, set up User Groups and add your users to these accordingly.

  3. Site logo. The site logo will be shown for this site.

  4. Set the Theme for the site. Leave it empty to use the same theme as on the Help Center site.

  5. If you want the Site Switcher to be shown on this site, make sure this option is checked.

  6. Start site for groups. The start site feature makes it possible to direct users to specific sites when they log in. This setting is based on Jira User Groups and can be used for licensed and unlicensed (JSD customer) users.

  7. Start site for anonymous users. Check this box to make this site the start site for any user that is not logged in.

Drag and drop the JSM projects you want to have on this site.

Add categories. A category allows you to further direct your users and divide your portals, or get you a landing page where you can add information and links.
