Use space settings to customize the looks and functionalities of Confluence pages and blog posts on your Refined sites.

Global space settings apply to all spaces on your site, except those with custom space settings. Use global space settings to decide the default look of your spaces, and customize specific spaces with custom space settings. When you update global space settings, these changes don’t apply to spaces with custom space settings.

Edit a site’s global space settings

Global settings apply to all spaces on your site, except those with custom space settings.

  1. Head to the Refined Administration.

  2. Click Sites in the left-hand menu.

  3. Select the site.

  4. Click on the Audience Features tab.

Set up custom space settings

A space’s custom settings override the site’s global space settings.

  1. Go to a Confluence page within the space on your Refined site.

  2. Hover your cursor on the left-hand page tree menu.

  3. Click the Cogwheel icon that appears.

A label at the top of the settings list shows whether the space settings are global or custom.

Settings

Embedded pages (beta)

Although the vast majority of Confluence pages are displayed on Refined sites without problem, you might want to add pages to your sites that include formatting or macros that Refined doesn’t (fully) support.

In that case, embed Confluence pages on private Refined sites so they look just as they do in native Confluence:

  • Display any third-party macro

  • Show all original formatting

  • Edit the page directly on the Refined site. This is only possible for the new Confluence editor and if the user has Confluence permissions to do so.

Availability

Due to technical limitations, this feature is only available on private sites that don’t have a custom domain. Please vote on this public Atlassian ticket. Site visitors on Chrome need to have cookies enabled to see the pages.

If the setting is not available, it will be displayed in grey in the site’s Space Settings.

Impact on other settings and performance

Embedding Confluence pages:

  • Disables the following the space settings:

    • Display authors. The embedded pages will still show author and last updated though, because this is standard information on a native Confluence page.

    • Show estimated read time

    • Table of content

  • Moves some controls that are normally located at the top of the page, to the bottom of the page:

  • May cause slightly slower performance on-page.

  • May cause certain page interactions not to work, such as opening links located within third-party macros.

Additionally, since Embedded Confluence Pages are shown in an iFrame, some macros will be displayed as an iFrame within an iFrame (e.g. Miro or Figma). In those cases, this may result in a sub-optimal experience for users.

Display authors

Show authors at the top of Confluence pages and blog posts. This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting. The embedded pages will still show author and last updated though, because this is standard information on a native Confluence page.

Show estimated read time

Show the estimated read time at the top of Confluence pages and blog posts. This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting.

Enable Confluence space homes

When this setting is disabled, clicking the title of the left-hand side menu takes users to a customizable landing page. When this setting is enabled, it takes you to the space home (space overview) instead. Regardless of this setting, users can find the Confluence space home via search, modules, or Confluence Pages.

To direct users to your Confluence space home instead of the landing page on your site, link a module directly to it in the Page Builder:

  1. Add the space to your Refined site. You can choose to hide it from the navigation menu, if you’d like.

  2. Enable the Confluence space home for this space.

  3. On any page in this space, click the title of the left-hand menu to see the space home. Copy the URL of this page.

  4. Add that URL to a module in the Page Builder.

Table of contents

A table of contents helps users navigate long pages:

  • It lists all headings on a page

  • It moves along with the user as they scroll down

  • It shows which paragraph the user is reading

  • It can take users to another paragraph with a simple click.

Users can hide or show the table of contents by clicking the button on the right-hand side of the page. Note that the button only appears when you set the Confluence page width to 68% or less in the Theme Editor.

This setting is not available when you have enabled the Embedded Confluence pages setting.

Likes

Let users like Confluence pages and blog posts on your site, and shows how many likes a page or post has.

Feedback

Gather feedback from users on Confluence pages and blog posts to improve your sites. Users can choose to give the feedback anonymously or tied to their user account.

Users with Confluence Page View permissions can see, edit, or delete the feedback they provided. They can’t see others' feedback.

Users with Confluence Add/Edit Pages permissions can see everyone’s feedback. They can mark feedback items as resolved or unresolved.

If you disable the feedback feature, users can still view previously-provided feedback.

View feedback

 Page-specific feedback

Access a page’s feedback by clicking the speech bubble icon at the top of the page.

On your Refined site, unresolved feedback is marked with a red number on the speech bubble. In Confluence, you can see the red number when you click on the Refined logo at the top of the page.

 All feedback on a site

To find an overview of all feedback on a Refined site:

  1. Go to the site and log in.

  2. Click your avatar in the top-right corner > Feedback.

If you have unresolved feedback on your site, a red number appears on your avatar.

 Feedback on all your sites

To access feedback on all your Refined sites, go to the Refined Administration and click your avatar.

Sidebar search

Add a search field to the left-hand page tree menu of Confluence pages.
